When you try to make your board stronger in TFT, it is easy to focus only on your units.
Level up. Roll for 2-stars. Add stronger units.
Of course, all of those matter.
But your board is not built from units alone.
If your items are not built, your board is not built either.
Upgrading units and completing items are both ways to make your current board stronger.
When your board feels weak, there is nothing wrong with wanting to upgrade your units.
But before you do that, look at your items once.
If you have components that can already become a completed item, that is combat power you still have not put onto the board.
Leveling and rolling both cost gold.
And rolling does not guarantee that you will hit the units you want.
By contrast, if you already have the components for a completed item, you can turn those resources into board strength immediately.
That is why, when I teach newer players how to make their board stronger, I often say:
Items. Items. Items first.
Not because they do not know that items are important.
It is because when they decide they need to get stronger, they often try to improve their units before using the item power they already have.
When you catch yourself thinking, “My board is weak, I should roll,” first ask:
Do I have an item I can make right now?
